  Cures
 

Shuddering Diff while turning corners

1) oil old. change oil with correct type to level

2) limited slip diff broken or worn or seized. strip and replace worn parts

3) incorrect oil used at service. drain oil and fill with correct type to level

4) no LSD additive used (Jackaroo/Rodeo/Patrol/Pajero typical). add correct additive

 

Hard Shifting

1) oil too thick (especially when cold and frees up after a few KMs driving). use correct oil

2) clutch not disengaging. check clutch operation and adjust or replace as needed

3) syncros or sleeves worn out. strip gearbox and replace parts as needed

4) bent or seized selector rods (holden 4 speed typical). replace broken/worn parts

 

Loose gearshift

1) bolts holding shifter on have come loose (T5 commodore, falcon typical)

2) shifter bush worn, broken or missing (hilux, landcruiser typical)

3) pins in shifter housing worn or missing

4) thread on shifter nut or housing worn out ( borg warner 4 and 5 speed typical)

 

Noisy all Gears

1) diff noisy (bearings or diff gears). strip down and replace worn parts

2) diff or transfer case low on oil. refill with correct oil to level

3) transfer case noisy (bearings or gears) strip down and replace worn parts

4) transfer case chain slipping (in 4WD only). replace transfer chain

5) transaxle bearings or gears worn out (front wheel drive only) strip and replace worn parts

 

Noisy all gears but 4th (Rear wheel drive)

1) gearbox bearings or gears worn out. strip and replace worn parts

2) gearbox oil low. fill with correct oil to level

3) mainshaft tip or tip bearing worn. strip and replace worn parts (Mazda 4WD typical)

4) constant mesh gears worn out or broken

 

No drive when gears selected

1) clutch slipping or centre stripped out. replace clutch and machine flywheel

2) mainshaft or output drive spline worn out or stripped.

3) broken axle

4) worn diff splines

5) woodruff keys in countershaft stripped (will drive in 4th only). Nissan typical

6) input gears stripped (will drive in 4th gear only). replace broken gears

7) drive flange spline stripped ( 80 series landcruiser/landrover typical) replace spline peices

 

Clutch pedal stays on the floor

1) clutch master cylinder faulty. check fluid level is correct

2) clutch slave cylinder faulty. check fluid level is correct

3) gearbox nose cone broken off. replace broken part/s

4) clutch cable seized or broken. replace parts as needed

5) clutch fork or pivot ball broken. replace parts as needed

 

Can’t select 1st gear

1) clutch not disengaging. check cylinders, cable and clutch itself. replace as needed

2) syncro or sleeve worn out. strip gearbox and fit parts as needed

3) shifter or shifter bush worn out. replace parts as needed
